Mandrake: European Mandrake Image

Ruled by: Mercury, Uranus, Pluto

Invocatory: Diana, Ishtar, Aphrodite, Circe and Saturn

Element: Water/Earth

Gender: Feminine

Gemstone: Quartz

Tarot: The World

Common Names: Gallows, Devil’s Apples, mayapples, mandragona, manikin, herb of Circe.

The American Mandrake is a completely different species from the European Mandrake.
Mandrake is used in rituals to aid in protection, love, money and health. It is used in the form of incenses or sachets and you may also use the root to hang above mantels in your house for protection. When using Mandrake Root in spell work it requires a 3 day soaking period to wake up the root, this is done in rain water or spring water.

It is used as an aphrodisiac, but poisonous if taken internally and could be terminal.

The Cherokee use mandrake for a very different purposes and in all the elements for various forms of healing and magick. In the direction of north it is referred to as Spleenwort [Aspenium playneuron]. It is an evergreen fern and was used with other plants in a formula as eyewash. Another plant called mandrake [Mandragora officinarum] was used for treating skin conditions and warts. In the East, South and West direction they use one of the other forms of mandrake, called the Mayapple [Podophyllum peltatum]. It is called Indian apple or mandrake, and is used in “special Medicine”. Like sunflower and evening primrose, Cherokee myths hold mayapple as sacred. Mayapple is a member of the Bayberry family, along with twinleaf in the West Medicine and blue cohosh in the East. Mountain folks used it to treat cancer and as a liver tonic. In the South Mayapple is used for the treatment of warts and mixed with dandelion to apply to warts as well. The mountain folks were also aware that the mayapple root was poisonous, except for the ripe fruit.

Mayapple grows abundantly in damp wooded areas in the Appalachian and Smokey Mountains. The plant has distinctive umbrella-shaped leaves with a single white flower that blooms in May and a yellow berry that is ripe in July and August. The rhizomes were used as a laxative. The Penobscot of Main used it for certain cancers, along with periwinkle. Today mayapple is used to treat planter warts and as a treatment for cancer and tumors.

In the west direction it is known by the Cherokee name of oo ne ski u ke and has a large leaf and a single white flower. An elder said do not touch the leaves with your bare hands because they are poisonous, but the fruit is good. To dig them out you learn to use a wood spatulalike piece made of laurel to dig with, then you dry and crush it to make Medicine. In the old days it was used to purge the body of ails. The women prefer to use it for themselves and their children, roasted, and even use it on difficult sores to heal.

Warning: Mayapple contains agents that are irritating to the skin. Do not use mayapple without the guidance of a person trained in its handling and use. This member of the Barberry family should not be used during pregnancy.
In Rome by a senatorial decree it is considered Illegal and is so titled Illegal Aphrodisiacs and Abortifacients. It is the magickal substance “venemo” that is forbidden by Roman law, According to Pliny, Natural History XXV.95, XXVII.2, XXIX.23, cf. Quintlilian, Declamations 7.4; 8.5.

It is associated to the Goddesses of Aphrodite/Venus and Hecate/Trivia, as you can see it is associated to both the light and dark aspects of the Goddess. However, do note that it is also associated to the Love Goddess in Egypt, which is Hathor.
It was the sacred plant of Aphrodite and was the golden apple that was the centre of her garden. It was identified with or equal to henbane, because of Aphrodite’s characteristics and effects.

Mandrake is important herb to witchcraft and gynaecological medicine. It served midwives since antiquity to increase sexual desire, to promote fertility, and pregnancy, to ease birth, to numb caesarean section, to kill the fruits of life in abortion, and to expel a stillborn.

The mandrake is also known by the names of “circeon, Mandragora Circaea, antimelon [in place of the golden apple], others called it kirkaia, dirkaia [plant of Circe/Kirke].

Mandrake is also interpreted as Moly. There are two kinds of mandrake the white which is associated to the male aspect and the black which is associated to the feminine aspect. Pliny states that when the seed is white the plant is called by some arsen, by other morion, and by others hippophlomos. [Pliny, Natural History XXV.147].
According to Apollodorus [second century B.C.E], the most important scholar of this time, it was the klrkata rixa, the plant of Circe, that was an amulet against the black magick of Pasiphae, a daughter of the Sun God Helios [Circe too was his daughter].

It was one of the key ingredients in the salves or flying ointments that Witches in the Middle Ages used. Here is a thought, what if we today made this blend and used it but under the watch of someone who monitored us. We could travel to many places and learn many things from our ancestors.

During Christian times the root of this herb was called Hexenkraut [witches’ wort], Unhold Wurzel [monster root], or Satan’s apple. In German it was called Alraune. It was treasured as a panacea that it was called Artz-wurxel [doctor root], “this is a term used by Williram von Ebersber in his exegesis to the Song of Solomon in 1060”. In the 16th century a wise woman or a witch was called an Alraundelberin [mandrake bearer]. Those who kept it in the home were said to have connections of the present and future.

Mandrake wine was used to treat insomniacs in the Middle Ages and early modern era. Many women were persecuted and exiled from villages and towns due to the use of mandrake.

The Birth and Song of Apollo
Latona our Goddess was swollen heavy with the seed of Heaven. She crossed the Tigris-Euphrates River in the pangs of labour. As she reached the distant shore, Her water broke, causing the first life-giving flood of inundation. Clutching the earth, she cried – and at that cry all worlds were silenced. Latona’s fingers marking the sand, and then arose the Sons of Earth, who danced the dance of sword and shield.
In the course of time, Latona gave birth to the Moon Diana and to the Sun Apollo. They were the Twin Wolves ever by the side of our Mistress of the Night.
The isles of Greece! the isles of Greece!
Where burning Saphho loved and sung,
Where grew the arts of war and peace,
Where Delos rose and Phoebus sprung!
To the light and rays of the Mighty Sun.
Protected by Jupiter and Neptune alike
Bring his son to this Earth to heal Mankind.
The Golden Wolf of The Sun is he,
Sol Invictus, Apollo, Phoebus, Delphinus and Lucifer,
Bringer of Light, healer to all, poet, musican
Apollo is of all
As upon this night of honour to Apollo,
We stand before He, our God, our Sun God
We venerate, honour, work and serve he.
As his rays now again to awaken and to rise,
Let the Sun God Awaken and been so seen by all eyes.
As it is our song to thee Apollo, Phoebus, Sol Invictus, Lucifer
We honour thee.
Hymn to Apollo
How Apollo’s laurel sapling shakes!
How the whole temple shakes! Away, away with the wicked!
It must be Phoebus kicking at the door with his fair foot.
Do you not see? The Delian palm nods gently,
All of a sudden; the swan sings beautifully in the air.
Bolts of the doors thrust yourselves back.
Keys–open the doors! For the god is no longer far away.
So, young men, prepare yourselves for singing and dancing.
Apollo appears not to all, only to the good.
He who sees him is great; who does not is lowly.
We will see you, Worker from Afar, and we will never be lowly.
Let the cithara not be silent.
Nor your step noiseless with Apollo approaching, you children,

What is the Black Moon, is it another term for Dark Moon? No. Black Moon is when two Dark cycles occur in one given month. It is believed that the time of a Black Moon is a time of great power within the spiritual realms and any magic worked/cast on this night is especially powerful. Black Moons occur once every six to eight years and vary at the time of the year when they appear. The last Black Moon occurred in 2003 May 1st and 30th are the days of the two dark cycles. Previous years are December 1986, June 1992, and October 1997.

This year the Black Moon occurs under the sun sign of Taurus, as well as the Moon rising of Taurus. What does this mean? Well, that magic performed on this night needs to focus on characteristics of Taurus magic. Earth Element, The Bull, Venus, the colour green and Gaia, Isis and Osiris, Cerridwen, Bull of Minos, and Hecate who is ruler of the darker aspects of magic. Hecate is also the ruler of the Underworld who commands death and reincarnation and is the primeval dark mother.
Magic performed in a Black Moon is much of the same as the Dark Moon, only you are performing with a higher level of spiritual energy. So what magic can be performed under a Taurus Black Moon? Well, spells for prosperity, security, love, music and the arts all work good in this moon. Taurus also rules bindings, strength, endurance, and patience. Planting and Farming are good as well as consecrating ones pentacle. Now, magic worked under a Taurus Moon is best performed on a Full Moon, but in the case of the Black Moon you would perform this magic in the opposite of gaining, but releasing anything that is hindering you in these areas of your life. All things associated with our earthly nature are ruled under Taurus. So, if you are having issues with your sex life, this would be a good time to banish or bind the negative energies that surround your life in this area. Work spells that call upon dealing with intimate sexual issues, and physical connection, physical possessions, greed and wealth. Focus on removing what is hindering you in these areas, be it that you are in need of bettering your circumstances or removing circumstances that are in your way and not benefiting you at this time.

The next Black Moon shall occur in the year 2011 during the month of July, the first of the Black Moon’s shall be on the 1st day of July ruled by a Gemini Moon and the second New Moon making it a Black Moon shall be on the 30th day of July, ruled by the Moon in Cancer. Typically, the New Moons are ruled by the same as the ruling Sun in this case the New Moon on the 1st of July should actually be in Cancer not in Gemini as this is during the time of the Sun Sign of Cancer and the second New Moon {Black Moon} is ruled by Cancer Moon when it is during the Sun Sign of Leo, suffice to say that the New Moon of the 1st should be ruling Moon Cancer and the Black Moon of the 30th should be ruling Moon Leo, yet when we look at the Ephemeris both days are ruled by a Cancer Moon.

Yet, one must be wise and careful when working magic during this time, as too in Astrological terms the Black Moon is associated with L—-h, in which we do not speak or spell her name, so during this time it is best as with the Cancer energy in Sun and Moon to be watchful of your health, your children, pregnant women to be protected and to protect from fascination and temptations. Astrologically, depending with which planet she sits within shall determine her nature and what you need to watch out for as far as omens and portends.

Within the 2011 July Black Moon, she will sit in Pisces Retrograded, Pisces being ruled by Jupiter traditionally, in which normally would rule the energy of religion and the higher mind, however, the Black Moon is retrograded, which means that the energies shall be darker and more harmful with the energy being of darker, black magic being cast out into the universe. Sitting first on the 1st day of July in the fifth house, this house represents the children born, aunts, uncles, mothers, however, L—-h’s promise is to harm the children of the Adam and with it being in the child house denotes it is important to protect your children and keep them close by and away from strangers. Here too, she sits in the fixed star Mater, which is translated to mean Hollow Section, meaning no soul, this being where all evil resides.

On the 30th of July, she will sit in the fourth house which represents, the Father, families and those things associated to the those things that occur in the family structure. Here she sits in the fixed star Azelfafage also known as Pi (π) Cygnus, Azelfafage, is a star in the tail of the Swan. As we know this was one of Zeus shape shifted forms in order to lie with Leta and from this she bore twins, one child being the seed of Zeus and the other the seed of her husband, creating Pollux and Helen of Troy and the Constellation Gemini and Castor.

With this specific placement it portends to watch for those things in which are false in appearance that what you are seeing may not be what it really is false words and hidden agendas. Here Jupiter/Zeus is seen as the Dark Warrior where all the residence of dark and darkness resides. Be wise during this time. Protect your children and do not allow strangers into your life or home and watch closely those who try to drive a wedge between relationships, as throughout the entirety of the month she will move throughout all the houses created chaos and havoc.
Specific Lunar Magic

Magic in which can be performed when the New Moon is in Gemini cusp of Cancer is healing to lungs, work on anxiousness, nerves and shoulders. Also, here too is a Cazimi with the Sun and Moon, with Mercury in the same house there shall be throughout the month a change in humanity and their views about Religion. When the Black Moon is in Cancer focus on healing and balancing of moods, breasts, stomach and weight issues, here work on releasing unwanted feelings and emotions. The Moon being in the ninth house on the 1st of July here focuses on psychic workings, dreams and there will understand of the planets through mind communications as well as visions and dreams of beautiful places and positions of prestige. The Moon again on the 30th shall be in the ninth house in Leo and again with Mercury, the Sun and Venus, in which the Sun, and Venus are Cazimi which denotes a time of Prophecy and divination to occur and with Mercury and the Moon too here, shows where humanity shall be affected by Religion to some degree.

Born Old

There is a term “Born Old”, this means that one who is born old is born having learned all lessons that one is to learn in his/her lifetimes. This of course is accomplished through many lifetimes and not just one. Born old persons are born on a spiritual veil, so there powers will be easier obtained through out one’s life. One might consider that, being born old could be a time of the Black Moon, as well as either Samhain or the Winter Solstice, these are times when the veil is the thinnest and spiritual powers and energies are at the strongest.
And one will notice that these are the darker times of the station wheel, so Hecate would rule over one that was Born Old.

Herbal Associations to Hecate:

Garlic, Mandrake, Willow, Aconite, Almond, Lavender, Myrrh, Cypress, Opium Poppy, Mugwort, Hazel, Cardamon, Belladonna, Hemlock, Mint, Dandelion, Lesser Celandine, Hellebore, and Yew.

Familiar Associations to Hecate:

Bull, with the allies of the crane and the bee. Oak, mistletoe and yew. Earth and Fire, South and North, Caomhain and Yule. Bull’s Blood [black bulls wreathed in yew were sacrificed to Hecate], Dog, with the allies of the vine, earth, North East, and Samhain, also associated with lunar goddess. Frog, also called Puddock and associated allies of horsetail, stonechat, horse, and water serpent, water, West and East, Herfest and Ostara. Hare, with associated allies of broom and gorse, cat and stag, earth and fire, East to South East, Ostara and Beltaine. Owl known for wisdom, with the allies of ivy, air, Northwest, and Samhain. Toad, with the allies of sow thistle, horse, earth and North. The toad is associated with abundance and fertility. Ii is both connected lunar and Underworld. Wolf, with allies of hop, blackthorn, rowan, earth, North West to North East, Samhain to Imbolc. Hecate was also know to shapeshift into a wolf.

Now being that this year the Black Moon falls in May and is associated with Beltaine, and new beginnings, growth of seeds planted both in the earth and within ourselves. We can work magick for renewal, procreation, and fertility. This is time for those of us to begin a new journey within this station on the wheel.

In all things when working with the Other Worlds it is best if you do not know what you are doing to leave well enough alone, and when natures and energies are like this it is best to work the opposite to defeat the negative and evil with the power of the Light and Sun.

Blessed Spring Equinox

Wishing everyone a most Blessed Spring Equinox, the rites we gather and celebrate are truly in our hearts and there is not always a need to be in a public or large circle, we manifest and cast our own circles when we do magic to bring health, healing, prosperity and joy to others lives.

This Spring Equinox may you all be in my circle of magic and may you all be blessed with all fantastic joys and new endeavours.

My love is my circle and that is the strongest magic of all. Look into the mirror and see where your truth lies from within, do you do magic for the greater good or do you do it to build up your ego the latter is the wrong way to go for when we give openly without thinking of ourselves we are blessed beyond all we can imagine.

Blessed Spring Equinox to you all and Happy New Year.

Book Review: The Path of the Shaman, by Anna Franklin

Path of the Shaman (Eight Paths of Magic)

The Path of the Shaman is a book two by Anna Franklin that focuses on the eight paths of a witch/.Witch. It is journey in which few experience and when they do it is one of great calcination and dissolution of ones entire self, and one as Anna herself describes as not wishing it upon her worst enemy.  When she speaks of this process it is called a shamanic crisis one in which is a very personal experience and each one who undergoes this transformation does so individually, it is not without experiencing pain to the level of losing all control over your own self, physically.  It takes you to the realms in which if you are not strong enough, you will never return.

As quoted directly from Chapter 2; ”Though anyone can offer themselves to the spirits, there is no guarantee that the spirits will accept.  The candidate is always subject to trial and testing before the initiation in the Otherworld can take place, encapsulating a very real dissolution, death and rebirth in the core of his being, a process entirely out of the shaman’s control and often sudden and violent in its onset.”  ”The initiation consists in an ecstatic experience, during which the candidate undergoes certain operations performed by mythical Beings, and undertakes ascents to Heaven and descents to the Underworld or subterranean World.”  In the same chapter as spoken of from above, Anna along with two others go into great detail their surgery’s by the mythical Beings in which brought them to their path as Shaman.  Anna and the others share extremely personal experiences and sufferings in which they endured along their path.  In understanding this, then it is easy to see that one of the first known Shamans from the western world would have been Jesus himself.  He was born to this world by a woman and that of the seed of an Upperworld mythical being and then was hung on the cross to die at the age of 33, then buried and he descended to the Underworld and then returned to the Middle World and finally ascending to the Upperworld.

There is mention of the the Shamans Cosmos world the three levels in which exists and that only a Shaman may see and know personally.  The Middle Earth, where we live, the Underworld and the Upperworld, the Underworld were all must go when we die and are prepared for such hidden knowledge, the Upperworld the world of the Angels and the spirits that aid us and protect us as we travel the path of our lives.  She goes into great detail of the World Tree and the Tree of Life with references to all other cultures and their views, which are all very similar from culture to culture.  Also, in this chapter she mentions that of the Black  Stone, the Meteoric Stone, the meteoric stone which is also called the black stone is not common in knowledge.  It is the stone in which is housed at Mecca and part of a yearly pilgrimage in which the Muslims are required to make, they go there for prayers and the asking of healing from the Great Mother.  This stone is from the Upperworld and it represents on this earth the Mother of all creation.  It is the one that holds all within.  There is more on the cosmos, the pole star and more.

There is mention and in great detail of how one travels the cosmos, by the spirit to do the work of healing and learning of old knowledge which is through the astral planes and the different levels of ones consciousness we experience as we go into trance, or in dream states.  What we must do to prepare ourselves physically, mentally and spiritually prior to being able to entrée this state as well as different gateways that are available and how to return and protect oneself while out of the physical form.  Many points she discusses throughout the entire book draws anyone back to the knowledge of the Emerald Tablet as well as the work’s of Dion Fortune.  Which is not common in today’s modern Wicca studies or among the New Age teachings?

Continuing we get to where she speaks of the various spirit worlds one will encounter and the view of other cultures, as I am a Strega I will make reference to her point on the Italian culture.  ”The Italian carnival society Cavallino assembled under the banner of Erodiade (ero dia de), a name for the Queen of Faeries, possibly synonymous with the witch goddess Herodias.  The society grew with prominence in the Middle Ages, appearing in processions, pantomimes and healing sessions, but many have had a very ancient, Pagan origin.  It was exclusively male, its members dressed in women’s clothing and wore make up.  They always gathered in odd numbers, such as seven, or nine or eleven.  The Catholic Church persecuted them as Pagans who worshipped the Goddess Diana.

Anna goes into great deal of the types of spirits and their powers they bestow onto human-folk they may take a liken to as well as power animals and how they come to us in our times of specific need to guide us to understand and to gain understanding in our journeys we are to encounter.  There is great focus on the types of plant allies a Shaman works with and a shaman’s view that we are kin to all things and that all things have a spirit that resides within them.  Yes, there are those herbs in which are used to obtain a level of trance and they assist us to achieve a level in our meditation and allowing us to journey to the Otherworld, though it is not without a cautionary note.  She cautions us on the plant spirits, ”However, any relationship with a power plant is precarious, and its spirit must be approached with respect.  To use a power plant for recreational purpose is an abuse of its energies and will lead to the subjugation of the magicians will by the plant spirit.  Meaning the magician has no control over the plant spirit or his or herself, the plant spirit has full control.  This means a loss of your Personal Power.  In reading this caution it reminds me of something Dr. Leo Louis Martello wrote in his words of wisdom regarding the Craft.  He states the following:  “In the Craft, there is no hard dogma. Hard drugs are forbidden. Mindless morons can’t be a compliment to our Mother Goddess.  Power is something personal, not to be used over others, which is contrary to Craft ethics. Those who think the Old Religion will make them masters over others are slaves to their own self delusions.

Anna finishes by speaking about what Personal Power is Not and the practices of a Shaman.  She speaks of an experiment a Japanese doctor performed using the water element.  He took two glasses and placed a crystal in each one, on one of the glass he wrote on a piece of paper the word Thank you and on the other You Fool the crystal inside the glass of water with the words thank you started to grow and the crystal in the glass of water with you fool did not, thus showing the powerful nature of water and how important it is to us.  We are 90% water in our body, so imagine if you thank yourself all the time and others, just imagine how we would all grow with a kind word.  When speaking of the various types of divination, magic and castings we do as a Shaman even a witch many in this day and age focus on the weather.  Myself personally I have had many people comment due to the high levels of heat how they were going to do weather magic to bring rain.  My advice always is no, when you are doing magic of this level you need to be aware that unless it is so severe that you need to consider beyond your own selfish needs, to take anything from another region is to ultimately cause harm of some kind.  While you may feel you need it, it may be needed more in another region.  This goes for any magic, you do not cast just to cast, you do not just invoke to invoke there has to be a reason when you call on the powers and forces of the Otherworld.  Magic is not a game but something true and real.

While I was reading The Path of the Shaman I was reminded of many things I have learned and was guided wisely with advise in the past, also being reminded of many journeys in which I have travelled to the Otherworld, the Underworld and the Upperworlds.  I have seen many things in my life and as a Witch but I needed a gentle reminder of a few things, it also guided me more in some specific research I have been doing which I will not speak of so much here.  What I am saying is that sometimes we need something and the Gods bring it to attention in many ways, a book, a kind word from another, a picture, a quote a journey or a sign in the mundane world that only a witch would notice.  Pay attention and you will be amazed.

This is an extraordinary book and one that ever Witch/witch should own and have as part of her/his library.

Book Review: Ancient Spellcraft From the Hymns of the Hittites to the Carvings of the Celts, by Laura Perry

I have had this book for many years, it is a book of various spells that aid Magicians in manifesting that of fertility, protection, healing, prosperity and more.  In this work Laura Perry covers ancient cultures such as the Celts, Egyptians, Hittites, Crete, Greece, Rome and Scythia.

There are a lot of way and spells that we use as Magicians today to assist in our magical workings to assist those who seek us out for healing, protections, removing of curses or hexes, prosperity, love, fertility and more.  This is a book that focuses on the spells of our ancients incorporating some of the simplest of ingredients, many you can find in your kitchen cupboards and from the recycling of glass jars, and more.

As a practicing Witch I was taught that some of the most powerful magic is the simplest magic as it is from the heart and in this book she focuses much on the same concept in how she guides those according to the specific spells.  She focuses a great deal on the clearing of mind, mental focus on the work you are to manifest and of course the invocations of the Gods to intercede on our behalf.  All of this is how I was taught by my True Mother in how to do my magical workings.

This is a must have for anyone who practices magic it is in my opinion worth the value.

Purchase your copy today here and enjoy it as much as I have and see what Magic you can make and Manifest in your life and that of others.

Sleeping Talismans

dream_a_zSleeping Talisman
Picatrix Goal of the Wise; Ghayat Al-Hakim

According to the Picatrix there are four talismans in which can be made to aid in sleep to deep sleep.

1. A sleeping talisman, the way the talisman is made is by taking an equal an amount of half dirham of opium, a strip of mandrake and black anesthetic seed, one sixth dirham of pleasant smelling nuts, small wood branches and pure sandalwood. Grind and kneed with green coriander juice. Then you get putrefy is so it mixes and unites together and the spirits harmonize in it for the wanted action. Then you feed one carat of the mixture and that is enough to put anyone into a deep sleep.
2. Another sleeping talisman with that has a more powerful effect; the way this is done is by taking two small amounts of each of hard bent nuts, red anesthetic seeds, mandrake or its bark, black poppy seeds, three small amounts of saffron and one small amount of basswood. Add all and putrefy it for three days. Then use one carat of the mixture in drinks to get the effect of sleeping.
3. Another talisman for sleeping like the first two, this one is made with equal amounts of opium, mandrake bark, lettuce seed, hard bent nut seeds, rose of Jericho juice, black hellebore and seed of black poppy. Grind the ingredients very fine and mix with two times of the amounts with aged wine and put in a container to putrefy for a couple of days. Then use one carat of the mixture in drink.
4. Another talisman for the extreme deep sleeping, the way this is done is by taking an equal amount of anethetic seed juice, vaccine juice, black poppy seed juice and wine or any alcoholic juice. Add to this one tenth the total weight of the first ingredients worth opium. Melt the opium, then add fermented fig juice that was distilled at least four times and putrefy the mixture and use about one carat of this because it is a very powerful mixture and the spirits power in it is very effective.

Note of Caution: As many of these recipes have ingredients are illegal today and can cause severe hallucinations it is best to use these only with another and one who has knowledge of blending the herbs correctly for the uses they are intended for. Many of these recipes from the ancient times were also used when Magicians wanted to travel into the Astral Realms to gain insight, communicate with the spirits, and do astral healing.
